Why Should I Come to The University of Tulsa?

1. Size

We have about 70 undergraduate chemical engineering majors and 8 faculty. This is an excellent student-to-faculty ratio which means you will have access to the professors, for help in classes, for student organizations, and for undergraduate research projects (even for those not planning on graduate school).

2. Facilities

The chemical engineering students have their own computer lab. Software in the department includes plant simulation software and plant control software used by professional chemical engineers in chemical manufacturing facilities. You will learn how to use this professional software as part of your classes. The undergraduate chemical engineering laboratory is modeled after a control room in an industrial setting. Process control computer software and hardware is the same as the best available in industry.

3. Student Body

The chemical engineering students are active in many different groups on campus. Our chemical engineering group (AIChE) has placed in the top ten for the past four national competitions for a chemically-powered model car, and our team is the current world champion. Our students have also won national prizes in AIChE.

4. The University

The University of Tulsa is a relatively small, private school of the highest quality. We compete in NCAA Division I sports, and have been rated 90th among 248 national doctoral universities in the U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges" 2005 edition. We are also ranked in The Princeton Review's annual survey, "Best 357 Colleges". TU is in the top ten at no. 9 for the happiest students. Because of our personal attention to students, The University of Tulsa appears as one of the top 50 colleges for women in the October issue of Cosmo Girl magazine. Read more at:

5. Jobs

The chemical engineering profession is a wonderfully broad profession. Our students have gone to work for companies such as Bristol-Myers Squibb, Motorola, Black & Veatch, Visteon Glass Plant, Delphi Catalysts, Lehman Brothers, Air Hygiene, and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) in addition to traditional areas in the chemical, petroleum, and petrochemical industries. You might like to see a list of industries where chemical engineers work around the nation. One such list is given at the AIChE website at:

AIChE

Other students have attended medical school or law school or have done further chemical engineering graduate work.

6. Salaries

Chemical Engineers are some of the best paid professionals in any discipline. Often, they top the list of starting salaries for all four year BS degrees. Take a look at the salary information for a wide range of professionals given at Jobweb:

JobWeb.com

In starting salaries, chemical engineers are better paid than mechanical engineers, computer engineers, and business professionals such as accountants. Also, check out the comparative numbers for starting salaries of chemists and chemical engineers at:

Chemistry.org

Chemical engineering BS graduate starting annual salaries are about $15,000 more than pure chemists.
