Prerequisites by Topic:  Organic Chemistry I (co-requisite).

Textbook:  The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual, A Student’s Guide to Techniques by J.W. Zubrick, Sixth Edition, J. Wiley and Sons, Inc., 2004.

Other Required Material:

Course Objectives: To reinforce the concepts of organic chemistry introduced in the lecture.  To provide additional “hands-on” experience in the laboratory.  To encourage accurate observation and the development of deductive reasoning.

Topics Covered:

Crystallization and Melting Point Determination (1 week)

Simple and Fractional Distillation (1 week)

Isolation of a Natural Product (Trimyristin) (1 week)

Materials Analysis—Mixed Melting Points (1 week)

            Thin Layer Chromatography (1 week)

            Molecular Modeling (1 week)

            Extraction (1 week)

            Column Chromatography (2 weeks)

            Steam Distillation  (1 week)

Determination of an unknown structure (2 weeks)

Class/Laboratory Schedule:  Laboratory meets for one 2 hour and 50-minute session each week for 14 weeks.

Professional Component Contribution:  This course provides one hour of general education, specifically advanced chemistry to complement the chemical engineering content.

Relationship to Program Outcomes:

  • Outcome a:  this course requires students to apply knowledge of chemistry.
  • Outcome b:  this lab requires students to conduct experiments and analyze and interpret data.
