CHEM 4021 Physical Chemistry II Laboratory
Required course for ChE program
Catalog Description: Laboratory experiments supplementing Chem 4023, with experiments related to spectroscopy, kinetics, polymers, colloids, electrochemistry, diffusion, and thermochemistry.
Prerequisites: Chem 3031, 3033 or ChE 3063.
Corequisites: Chem 4023
Prerequisites by Topic: Laboratory techniques learned in General Chemistry I and II laboratories, techniques of differentiation and integration covered in Calculus I and II and the theory from Physical Chemistry lecture II specifically dealing with kinetics, spectroscopy and quantum mechanics.
Textbook: Laboratory Experiments written by the instructors are available to the students online.
Other Required Material: None
Course Objectives: This course is designed to:
1. Reinforce the theoritical concepts covered in Physical Chemistry II lectrue.
2. Familarize the students with data handling and analysis.
3. Teach the laboratory techniques associated with typcial physical chemistry laboratory work.
4. Give the students experience in writing scientific papers.
5. Expose the students to current topics in Physical Chemistry.
Topics Covered:
Library and literature techniques
Kinetics
UV visible spectroscopy
Rotational and vibrational spectroscopy
Current topics in Physical Chemistry
Class/Laboratory Schedule: Laboratory meets for one 2 hour and 50-minute session each week for 14 weeks.
Professional Component Contribution: This course provides one hour of general education, specifically advanced chemistry to complement the chemical engineering content.
Relationship to Program Outcomes:
- Outcome a: this course requires students to apply knowledge of chemistry.
- Outcome b: this lab requires students to conduct experiments and analyze and interpret data.
