MATH 2024 Calculus II
Required course for ChE program

Catalog Description:  Definite and indefinite integrals of functions of a single variable. Improper integrals.  Infinite series.  Introduction to differential equations. Emphasis on applications of calculus and problem solving using technology in addition to symbolic methods.

Prerequisites:  Math 2014

Corequisites: none

Prerequisites by Topic:  One semester of Elementary Calculus

Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 5th Edition, James Stewart, Thompson Brooks/Cole, 2003

Other Required Material:  TI 89 Calculator, Mathematica

Course Objectives: Competence in the elementary differential and integral calculus and its applications

Topics Covered:  

  • 1. Integration
  • 2. Applications of the Definite Integral
  • 3. Approximations and Series
  • 4. Differential Equations
  • 5. Parametric Curves.

Class/Laboratory Schedule: 

Class – Three times per week, 50 minutes each meeting

Laboratory – twice per week, 50 minutes each meeting

Professional Component Contribution:  This lab covers college-level mathematics. 

Relationship to Program Outcomes:

  • Outcome a: This course requires the students to apply their knowledge of mathematics.
  • Outcome d: Three team projects are assigned.
  • Outcome g: Every student is required to submit at least three team-written reports of typically five-to-ten pages.
  • Outcome k: TI-83+ graphing calculator and Mathematica™ are used regularly.
